Mobility Flows - Sustainable travelling

Stockholm is one of the fastest growing regions in Scandinavia. The challenges of this must be addressed while at the same time achieving the goal of reducing emissions of greenhouse gases.

The challenges

Stockholm’s traffic system is heavily subscribed and vulnerable. Many of the workplaces are located in the north of the city while housing is in the south. In order to travel in a north – south direction traffic today must travel through the inner city or use Essingeleden where capacity has already been reached during the rush hour period. Just one incident can lead to a large disruption in the whole traffic system.

The growing population increases the demand for the development of residential areas with both good road and public transport connections. The aim is for it to be simple to travel between home, work, school and leisure facilities.

The solutions

  • Townplanning. Stockholm’s new residential and work areas must have accessibility in focus. Roads, train tracks and other infrastructure is being developed for public transport as well as cycling, as attractive alternatives. Concentrating on the existing city (“brown field land”) is prioritised over more peripheral or “green field” sites.

  • Economic means of control. Stockholm has a system of congestion tax which is part of a larger package for an overall traffic solution for a better environment and growth. It comprises priorities and financing suggestions for measures related to roads, railways and public transport in Stockholm. Since the introduction of the congestion tax there has been a stable reduction of vehicle flows of around 20% which has lead to improvements in accessibility as well as the environment.

  • Clean cars. Stockholm has changed the vehicle market by promoting clean, alternatively fuelled vehicles and climate friendly public transport. At present more than one third of all new cars sold in Stockholm are clean vehicles. This is the result of a process of getting vehicles on the market by common procurement agreements, helping fuel stations to offer alternative fuels and by providing some incentives. The local authority has also actively worked to change attitudes and increase knowledge to encourage more new car buyers to choose environmentally friendly vehicles.

In this Deep Dive you will:

  • Meet Stockholm’s transport planners and environmental strategists and learn more about the strategies and concrete work the EU’s first Green Capital will deploy in order to achieve good accessibility and a good environment.
  • Meet Annette Kayser project manager in Copenhagen’s Technical and Environmental Administration, who will reflect on the session and talk about the process of planning for mobility with fewer cars in Copenhagen.
  • Listen to presentations and take part in discussions about how new technologies may help to improve economic development in cities and in Europe; reduce environmental impact and help increase the inhabitants quality of life.

Your hosts for this Deep Dive will be Staffan Forsell and Gustaf Landahl.
