The EUROCITIES Awards recognise outstanding achievement by EUROCITIES members in the delivery of local activities or practices which improve the quality of life for citizens. The Award is judged in the context of the theme of the annual EUROCITIES Conference and will focus on ‘Urban Challenges – Sustainable Solutions’.

The three categories of award are:

1. EUROCITIES Award for Innovation

This award recognises innovation in the planning and implementation of activities or practices by a local authority.
When breaking new ground in the challenging field of economic growth and climate change, we need to expand our current knowledge and encourage innovation. Innovation is an essential tool for the constructive development of policy.
Examples of this could include developing original projects related to economic growth or environmental standards, such as introducing new standards on local delivery or building regulations, or introducing concrete tools to improve the energy efficiency of existing projects.

2. EUROCITIES Award for Participation

This award recognises activities or practices of a local authority which are successful in actively promoting citizen participation in solving the climate challenge or stimulating the economy.
Each local government faces the challenge of raising awareness and building commitment on an individual level. Every citizen needs to be aware that climate change is a shared responsibility and that everyone needs to contribute.
Examples of this could be projects aimed at increasing awareness about environmental issues where local communities are actively involved, projects initiated by local residents and supported by the city council or maybe a project in which stakeholders and individual citizens feel strongly involved.

3. EUROCITIES Award for Cooperation

This award recognises cooperation undertaken by a local authority with partner organisations or cities.
We need to draw on all available resources, not only horizontally but also vertically and between sectors, to find an integrated solution. All sectors of society need to work together to combat climate change and to offset current economic growth problems. Potential projects falling under this heading include: partnerships between citizens, social stakeholders, the private sector or experts.

To submit a project, please download and fill in the Awards entry form.

The deadline for submissions has  been extended to Monday 14 September 2009. As you know, should your city be shortlisted for an Award, you will be asked to submit a short film about your project and hold a speednetworking session.

We would like to clarify that this doesn't necessarily have to be a real film, but can be an animation of slides, photos, etc. The main point is to visually present your project and show it to the jury and the participants at the EUROCITIES 2009 Stockholm conference. This 1-minute film will be shown on the website, during the Welcome reception in Nalen and in the conference venue.

Let us know if you are unsure of which category your project falls under as we are happy to advise you!
