The Hammarby model - Integrated waste, water and energy
Hammarby Sjöstad was for many years Stockholm’s largest urban development project. The areas location as a natural continuation of Stockholm has helped shape the infrastructure, planning and design of the buildings. Stockholm is currently planning for “Hammarby 2”, Norra Djurgårdsstaden and its environment profile.
This Deep Dive focuses on the issue of sustainable transformation of brownfield areas and Stockholm’s vision to be world leader in developing, commercialising and adapting new energy- and environmentally friendly techniques. Hammarby Sjöstad has for many years been at the forefront for city development and brownfield transformation. The Hammarby Model offers brilliant opportunities for the citizens to take an active part in eco-friendly living where on-site sewage works treat sewage and waste, the heat recovered and nutrients extracted via new technology for use as farmland fertilizer. Combustible waste in the area is recycled as heat and food waste is converted into bio gas and energy is produced in a renewable fuel district heating plant in the area.
- Let’s spend the afternoon together in Sjöstaden to see for yourself how it all started out and how the area functions on a day-to-day basis.
- Find out how metropolitan sustainability ambitions are reflected in Amsterdam’s city development, and discuss your own experiences.
- Learn about Urban Matrix, a 6th EU framework project and its tremendous work on the means for sharing experiences on sustainable city development
- Experience the information centre GlasHusEtt where all theories about eco-friendly living comes alive.
