The highlight of EUROCITIES 2009 Stockholm will be the Stockholm Appeal. The appeal states the mayors’ desire for an international climate change deal to be reached at the United Nations COP15 in December 2009 and will take the form of a one-page press release. Written in cooperation with the US Conference of Mayors, it will follow up on the work done on climate change, for example with the EUROCITIES Climate Change Declaration and the US Conference of Mayors’ Climate Protection Agreement.

This document will be handed over during the Friday morning plenary by Sten Nordin, the Mayor of Stockholm , Frits Huffnagel, Deputy Mayor of the Hague and representing the Presidency of EUROCITIES, and Elizabeth Kautz, incoming President of The US Conference of Mayors.

Our Deputy Prime Minister responsible for Energy and Enterprise, Maud Olofsson, will together with Robert Silverman, Deputy Chief of Mission at the US embassy in Stockholm, join our in the discussions on its political impact. The response of Senator John Kerry, Chairman of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, sponsor of the Senate bill to reduce CO2-emissions by 80 per cent by 2050 and the leader of a delegation to the COP15 talks in Copenhagen, will be shown on screen.
