13:30-18:00 CONNECTIONS Final Event “Social Inclusion at the City level”

The CONNECTIONS final event will present participants with an interesting socially orientated side event with which to start the EUROCITIES 2009 Stockholm. The Social Affairs Forum has committed itself to produce reports on different social inclusion initiatives from our members, and how they are organized. In doing so the project managed to include research institutes and NGOs (one of each for every member city participating).

The CONNECTIONS team is proud to present its findings to a larger audience of EUROCITIES members. We will have the final report available to all participants. It includes the development of a peer review method and proves that mutual learning and peer reviewing are valuable instruments to reinforce the European Commission's (EC) Open Method of Coordination. Ground level experiences like the ones that have been the focus in CONNECTIONS show that cities throughout the EU face similar challenges with regard to multiple deprivation. Therefore it is important for cities and the EC to develop a European policy context and implement effective social inclusion policies at the local level. It also provides an attractive overview of striking issues found during our visits in Leeds (UK), Malmo (SE), Rotterdam (NL), Newcastle (UK), Oslo (NO), Vienna (AU), Munich (DE) and Budapest (HU). Themes addressed in CONNECTIONS are: financial inclusion, democratic participation, problematic youth, unemployment, housing exclusion, neighbourhood work and gender equality.

The side event will take place at Clarion Sign Hotel - the venue of the conference.

14.00 – 15.00 Globe Forum City Challenge 2010

During Maud Olofsson’s, Minister for Enterprise and Energy Deputy Prime Minister Sweden, speech she challenged all EUROCITIES to take on the City Challenge, that has arisen from the need to showcase innovations, share sustainability projects and promote urban sustainable development.

Take on the challenge - Harness the Power of Collaboration

The City Challenge will lay the founding bricks for Europe’s largest database for sustainable development, and will become the leading tool for cities, researchers, businesses and innovators when looking for best practises within sustainable urban development.
By taking on the challenge you will become one of the funding city members of the database. As a member of the database you can easily get the innovative technologies and solutions you need to succeed.
The projects will be searchable by regional affiliation, industry, type of project, and will pin down what to focus on in urban development and how to collaborate more effectively across industries.
The database will display results and progress and real time status of what is going on globally in sustainable development.

Come listen to the organizations that stand behind the City Challenge, and how this initiative can solve the climate challenges ahead of us:

Johan Gorecki, CEO Globe Forum
Gustav Brandberg, Digital Business Advisor at Tieto
Hans Hassle, CEO PLANTAGON International AB.
Björn Sigurdsson, Climate Strategy at The city of Uppsala, Sweden's fourth largest municipality.
Fabian Levihn, Globe Forum research in collaboration with KTH, Stockholm
