The City of Stockholm will offset the greenhouse gas emissions linked to the EUROCITIES 2009 Stockholm. The city will take responsibility for the emissions that stems from the accommodation of the delegates (including energy use) and the consumption of food, as well as the travel to and from the conference venues and the hotel and airport transfer. However, to help lower the event's footprint further, individual delegates are strongly encouraged to offset their own travel to Stockholm using a calculator.

EUROCITIES 2009 Stockholm is working with U&W and their carbon footprint offsetting service ZeroMission. Each delegate’s offsetting cost is based on an estimation of the climate impact of their own air travel. The funds collected are then invested in a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project contributing to sustainable development in developing countries. Substituting fossil fuels with renewable alternatives as well as energy efficiency improvements contribute to the emission reductions of the projects.
U&W is the Swedish representative of myclimate, a Swiss foundation that develops and manages carbon offsetting projects. The CDM projects are approved and overseen by the UN and are a part of the Kyoto Protocol. The projects are certified according to the Gold Standard, a standard that has become synonymous with high quality projects that contribute to sustainable development in local communities on an ecological as well as a social level.
